South African News - George

A multi-story apartment building under construction, known as the Neo Victoria, tragically collapsed in George, South Africa on May 6th, 2024. The project's contractors, expressed their deepest sympathies and pledged full cooperation with the ongoing rescue efforts and investigation.

Focus on Rescue

Emergency responders are working tirelessly to locate and extricate the individuals still unaccounted for within the debris. Over 200 personnel are actively involved in this critical mission, as coordinated by Western Cape Premier Alan Winde and Local Government MEC Anton Bredell. Their primary focus remains the safe and swift rescue of those trapped.

Investigation Underway

The Western Cape Province has appointed an independent structural engineer, to investigate the cause of the incident. The Engineers, is meticulously examining the site alongside emergency responders. While acknowledging the complexity of the investigation, Winde stressed the province's dedication to uncovering the cause as swiftly as possible.

Developer and Project Details Revealed

George Mayor Leon van Wyk identified the developer responsible for the Victoria project. Approved plans, submitted in December 2022, envisioned a four-story building with 42 apartments above a basement parking area.

Premier Winde urged the public to refrain from spreading misinformation on social media during this critical time. His plea focused on prioritizing the rescue efforts and the well-being of those affected by the tragedy.
